Stations of Abandonment

A scriptural meditation of St. Charles De Foucauld’s “ abandonment prayer”

Good Father,

Father,

Jesus Prayed for me

“that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world.”

‭‭John‬ ‭17‬:‭21‬, ‭24‬ ‭

   1. Therefore, Each day I choose freedom in abandoning myself into your hands.

I abandon myself into your hands.

“Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper, laid aside his garments, and girded himself with a towel.”—John‬ ‭13‬:‭3‬-4

“Fear not for I am with you: be not dismayed for I am your God. I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”—Isa. 41:10

   2. So that you can make of me as you perfectly will.

Do with me what you will.

“For we are his workmanship, create in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”—Eph. 2‬:‭10‬ ‭

But we have this treasure in jars of clay, to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.”—2 Cor.‬ ‭4‬:‭7‬ ‭

   3. Whatever you would make of me, I thank you now.

Whatever you may do I thank you.

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you[.]”—1 Thess.‬ ‭5‬:‭18‬ ‭

   4. In freedom I prepare for all, I will accept all with joy.

I am ready for all, I accept all.

“The owner of the house might come late at night or early in the morning. Those servants are happy if their owner finds them watching whenever he comes.”—Luke 12:38

“[B]ut the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps.”—Matt.‬ ‭25‬:‭4‬ ‭

   5. For I see your will is good in me and in all your creatures. It is Life. Life in your hands.

Let only your will be done in

me, and in all your creatures.

“All things were made through Him and without Him was not anything made that was made.”—John‬ ‭1‬:‭3‬ ‭

“You open your hand; you satisfy the desire of every living thing.”—Ps. ‭145‬:‭16‬

   6. I truly wish to see this Life, o Lord!

I wish no more than this, O Lord.

“In him was life, and the life was the light of men.”—‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭4‬

“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.”—Ps. 16‬:‭11‬ ‭

   7.  So, into your hands I COMMAND my soul to remain in you.

   Into your hands I commend my soul;

“Thou hast said, ‘Seek ye my face.’ My heart says to thee, ‘Thy face, LORD, do I seek.’”—Ps. 27:8

“Yet, Lord, you are our Father ; we are the clay and You our potter: we are all the work of your hand.”—Isa. 64:7

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”
‭‭John‬ ‭15‬:‭5‬ ‭

   8. I both seek you and love you. I seek you with my mind and love you with my heart, and I love you with my mind and seek you with my heart.

I offer it to you with all the love of my heart,

“Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near[.]”—Isa.‬ ‭55‬:‭6‬

“For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.” Matt. 7:8

“And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the marriage feast; and the door was shut.”
‭‭Matthew‬ ‭25‬:‭10‬

   9. My whole being loves you, Lord!

   For I love you, Lord,

“And He said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.’”—Matt. 22:37

   10. And I so need to give myself to you that I may live.

And so need to give myself,

“I have been crucified with Christ; yet I live, no longer I, but Christ lives in me; insofar as I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who has loved me and given himself up for me.”—Gal. 2:20

   11. To surrender is to have Life,

To surrender myself into your hands,

“For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.”—Matt. 16:25

   12. With a spirit of boldness and conviction, not fear.

Without reserve, and with boundless confidence,

“For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.”—2 Tim. 1:7

“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”—Phil.‬ ‭1‬:‭21‬

   13. For you are my Good Father.

   For you are my Father

“For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, ‘Abba! Father!’”—Rom.‬ ‭8‬:‭14-15

   14. Amen . So be it done.

   Amen.

“And Mary said, ‘Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.’ And the angel departed from her.”—Luke 1:38

“For all the promises of God find their Yes in him. That is why it is through him that we utter our Amen to God for his glory.”—II Cor. 1:20

“Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, from everlasting to everlasting! Amen and Amen.”—Ps. 41:13
